CASE STUDY

The Catholic Youth Education Centre KANA

Thirteen years have already passed...

Created in 1994 at the initiative of Bishop Jan Wieczorek, KANA is continuously fulfilling its mission, which is education aimed at professional, intellectual and spiritual growth of the young generation... The first donor of KANA was Renovabis - Solidarity Action of German Catholics with People in Central and Eastern Europe.

So far, over 10 000 persons have benefited from a wide spectrum of training courses. KANA never ceases to strive to implement new projects enabling young people to find their place on the contemporary labour market.

Amongst the activities and projects carried out in the course of the last 13 years, it is worth mentioning the following:

  • Free-of-charge computer and foreign language training courses (English, German), at various levels - intended for youth from disadvantaged families and unemployed young people;
  • Addiction Prevention Facility, offering specialized assistance to young people menaced with addiction;
  • The Week of the Earth – the biggest ecological event in Silesia, organized in cooperation with the Museum of Mining in Zabrze;
  • Drama and Music Workshops, where young people with musical and acting talents contributed to musicals based on biblical themes: "Jonah", "Tobias", "The Song of Songs" and others;
  • Advanced vocational development training – „Multimedia in Teaching”, organized for secondary school teachers in cooperation with Siemens;
  • The project„Teach-IT.net” – a transnational undertaking consisting in creating an innovative system of teachers' vocational development in the field of Information Technology (Leonardo da Vinci EU Programme). The methodology developed under the framework of the Teach-IT.net project led to a cascade of other projects aimed at different target groups, such as: „Teach-IT.net in Silesia”, „Teach-IT.net in Ukraine”, „Femina-Net”, and others;
  • The project„InterEOL – Intercultural Education OnLine” (Socrates-Comenius 2.1. EU Programme), which - through instruction in construction of WebQuests - prepares teachers and students for dialogue in shaping Europe of different cultures.

Over 13 years KANA has established cooperation with educational organizations and institutions in Poland and Europe (CJD - Germany, the University of Tampere – Finland, the Ukrainian Catholic University, The Tischner European University, i wiele innych), teacher training centres as well as regional and global corporations. KANA has been granted the status of the Microsoft Regional Innovation Centre.
